Block Watch Participant

 

The Block Watch participant will actively be involved with their neighbors in building a safer community by taking ownership and responsibility for crime prevention in their community. Block Watch participants involved will be active in reducing the opportunity for criminal activity.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • REPORT WITHOUT DELAY all emergencies or suspicious activities to

9-1-1.

  • Add your information to the Block Watch list and map and inform your block captain/co-captain of any changes in the personal information required for the Block Watch map.
  • Ensure that Block Watch participation is not used as a vehicle for promotion for any other cause.  Although personal information is shared between neighbors in a telephone tree, lists and data are to be treated with confidentiality.
  • Welcome new neighbors and invite them to join the block watch.
  • Be more observant.  Take the time to look around your neighborhood.
  • Consider taking your turn as block captain or co-captain.  You can also volunteer to host your annual get together.
  • Watch out for your neighbors and their property.
  • Attend yearly Block Watch meetings.
  • Have an interest in preventing crime in your area.

 

Protect Your Property:

 

  • Take steps to target harden your property and residence.

o       Update security by installing deadbolt locks on exterior doors and additional locks on vulnerable windows.

o       Use electric timers on lamps and radios.

o       Light up the front and back entryways at night, whether you are home or not!

o       Engrave your property with your Texas drivers license number. Fill out an inventory sheet.

o       Post Block Watch decal on a home window and LP decals on cars.

o       Lock your doors and windows whenever you leave home, even if it is for a short time.

o       Keep tools and ladders in a locked storage shed or garage.

o       Have a trusted neighbor keep a duplicate house key. Do not hide it on the front or back porch.

o       When out of town, stop delivery of your newspaper and mail.

o       FREE – Call your Sheriff’s Department for a close (vacation) watch.

o       FREE – Get your vehicles windows etched with the VIN.
